Tax Collector FAQ's

1.    What is the last day that taxes can be paid?

    There is a ten day grace period, so the last day would be February 10th, May 10th, August 10th and November 10th.

2.    How is the tax rate broken down?

    Local Government, local schools, regional schools, County, County open space and Municipal open space.

3.    How do I apply for a senior citizen deduction?

    An application along with a supplemental income statement must be completed.  As of 10/1 of the pre tax year you must be 65 years of age or older, be a citizen and a resident of NJ, reside at the property and receive an annual income of $10,000 or less excluding social security.

4.    How are the yearly taxes caculated?

    Assessed value x the tax rate = yearly taxes

5.    When are taxes due? Example: tax bill reads due 7/1 and payable 8/1

    Taxes are due February 1, May 1, August 1 and November 1.

6.    Can I pay my taxes through the mail and will I get a receipt/

    You can send your entire tax bill and self addressed stamped envelope and the Tax Collector's office will remove the stub, stamp the back of the tax bill and forward the tax bill back to the taxpayer.

7.    Can taxes be paid with a credit card?

    Not at the present time.

8.    How do I file an appeal on my assessment?

    When you receive the Assessor's card in January, you may file an appeal with the Bergen County Board of Taxation.  You must file on or before April 1st.
