Crossing Guards

Mayor Amy Wilczynski, the Allendale Borough Council, and the Allendale Police Department consider the safety of our children a top priority. To increase the safety of our children walking before and after the school day, a crossing guard will be added to assist pedestrians with crossing George Street at the intersection of Hillside Avenue. As many parents know, numerous children walk to or from school to the borough library, or to alternate pick-up locations by way of Hillside Avenue.

The school day hours for school crossing guards to be on-post are as follows:

1)  7:45am until 9:00am

2)  2:45pm until 4:00pm

The lunchtime post time (11:15am – 12:45pm) will be eliminated. All current guards will receive a pay raise to ensure they are not financially impacted by the reduction in hours. Pay is now $30 per hour.

The one exception is the post at Hillside Avenue & Forest Road which is staffed during the following modified hours to assist high school students: 7:30am until 9:00am & 2:30pm until 4:00pm.

In the event of delayed opening of the Allendale School District, crossing guards will be at their designated posts from 9:45am until 11:00am & 2:45 until 4:00pm.

In the event of early dismissal of the Allendale School District, crossing guards will be at their designated posts from 7:45am until 9:00am & 12:30pm until 1:45pm.

It is important to stress the need for additional fill-in school guards. With the addition of the George Street location, thirteen (13) grossing guards are working daily. When one or more of these guards are off, those posts need to be covered with either a fill-in guard or police officer. We need your help! Please consider applying for a fill-in school guard position. Helping for a few hours periodically on an as-needed basis ensures the safety of our most precious population, our children.

Sincerely,
